How should asexuality be characterized?
Many people think that asexuality should be categorized under the LGBTQ category. There are numerous positive and negative ideas for each side of this idea.
Asexuality is a sexual orientation:
- Asexuality is already a legal sexual orientation in New York, but hardly anywhere else. It is important for asexual people all over the world to feel included.
- Including Asexuality under this umbrella would help promote awareness of this often over-looked topic. The majority of people have heard of the LGBTQ community, or are at least familiar with it.
- Michael Doré, organiser of the World Pride conference, said: "We want asexuality to be recognised as a valid sexual orientation, rather than a disorder or something people have to hide."
- The goal of the queer umbrella term is to include all gender and sexual minorities and their intersections. The idea is to extinguish the false binaries and social norms that diminnish these minorities. Asexuality falls into the minority category that needs awareness.
- If asexuality was categorized as a sexual orientation it would be seen as something that is a part of one's intrinsic identity, rather than something that is situational or acquired.
- Acceptance would be easier to achieve for asexuals if it was categorized as a sexual orientation because it would be seen as a 'real thing'. There could then be rules and laws created against the discrimination of asexuals.
- In this video about sex and gender in general, the narrator describes why asexuality is a sexual orientation.
Asexuality is not a sexual orientation:
- Asexuality is not a gender identity and it doesn't necessarily define one's sexual orientation. Just because some one is asexual doesn't mean they aren't attracted to people, they just don't have the desire to have sex with anyone. It is possible to be attracted to someone, whether they are of the same or opposite sex without wanting to have sex with them. The pie chart to the right shows the general identities for a large group of people who identify as asexual. This graph shows how asexuality is completely different from other types of self identification like sexual orientation and gender identity.
- While there are pros of being included in the LGBTQ community, discrimination tends to come with its membership. While asexuals may already experience some form of existence, a greater sense of "aphobia" may arise if it is categorized under LGBTQ.
- When does LGBTQ.... stop. There are numerous gender and sexual orientation identifications out there and it is nearly impossible to include them all. The letters in "LGBTQ" would be endless. Some think that identifications like asexuality should just be categorized under the "queer" umbrella rather than being a seperate sexual orientation.
- Many think that asexuality isn't a sexual orientation, but rather the lack of one.
- Which definition of “sexual orientation” do we have in mind? Sexual orientation can mean so many different things these days. It can include all patterns of sexual attraction, like personality features and physical features, or it can be limited to the extent of which gender plays a role in sexual attraction.
