I created this quiz to gain an understanding about what people think asexuality is. I wanted to see what topics I should emphasize when trying to create awareness. I have posted some of the results here.
The questions I asked were:
1) Have you ever heard of asexuality before?
2) What do you think asexuality means?
3) Do you know anyone who identifies as asexual?
Popular responses:
- "I've heard it in biology before. I assume it's related to asexual reproduction"
This is a common misconception. Many people think these two terms are the same, but they have completely different meanings.
- "I’m guessing since bisexual is liking both sexes then asexual is liking neither gender, no"
This person, like many other people think of asexuality as a sexual orientation. This is a controversial debate that is currently going on. You can find out more under the "Debate" tab.
- "Someone without a sex or gender."
This was a mythical response that I got surprisingly often.
- "Someone who isn't attracted to boys or girls"
This response is closest to the actual meaning of asexuality. However, an asexual person doesn't necessarily lack attraction, but desire. Just because an asexual person doesn't have sexual desire doesn't mean that there aren't romantically attracted to anyone. Asexuality is a fluid identification, and while some asexuals aren't attracted to others in any way, they can be.
About 3/4 of the people I surveyed thought that asexuality meant something that it doesn't. This emphasizes the lack of awareness of asexuality and the importance explaining common misconceptions since there seems to be so many.
