Sex isn't everything.
Welcome to this educational webpage about Asexuality. The purpose of this site is to promote awareness and understanding about asexuality and all that it encompasses. Many people have various misconceptions about what asexuality means, or they have never even heard about it at all. This is an important topic that is often overlooked, but deserves just as much attention as any other topic in gender and sexuality.
Not many people know about asexuality and those who do often see it as a controversy because our society is practically obsessed with sex. Tony Bogaert is an associate professor at Brock University in Ontario who says, "Theoretically the absence of sexual desire shouldn't be a problem, but ours is a media which suggests hypersexuality is the norm. Potentially, asexuality has become a 'problem' as it became more visible, and in a sense it's become the new stigma."
Suzie King, a counselor states, "That the industry wants to 'fix' asexuals and make them sexual is the most common comment I have heard; there is not much attention paid to the real psychological and emotional needs of asexuals." Asexuality is not something anyone can fix. It is an internal identification that we should not encourage people to hide. The first step to acceptance is awareness, and that is that main goal of this website.
